A Mother’s Day night drive in Dale County has ended in tragedy, leaving a family grieving and a 38-year-old man now facing a serious criminal charge after a crash claimed the life of his mother, authorities said.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday on Dale County Road 1 at the intersection with Alabama Highway 92, about seven miles south of Enterprise. Investigators said a Jeep Commander left the roadway under unclear circumstances before striking a utility pole.
Officials confirmed that 66-year-old Linda D. White of Geneva was riding as a passenger in the vehicle driven by her son, Alfonzo L. Nance. She suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Authorities said White was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. While investigators noted this in their initial findings, they have not yet released details on how much it may have contributed to the severity of the outcome.
Nance was also injured in the crash and was transported to Medical Center Enterprise for treatment. Following the investigation, officials later charged him with reckless murder in connection with his mother’s death, a charge that indicates authorities believe his driving behavior played a significant role in the fatal outcome.
At this stage, investigators have not publicly disclosed what specific evidence led to the reckless murder charge. It also remains unclear whether factors such as speed, distraction, road conditions, or possible impairment are being considered as part of the ongoing review.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, working to reconstruct the vehicle’s path and determine why it left the roadway on what should have been a routine night drive.
For the family, the incident has turned a holiday meant for appreciation and connection into a moment of sudden and irreversible loss. What remains now is a community and a household facing grief, legal questions, and the difficult process of understanding how a single drive ended in such a devastating outcome.
