Toby Cornett, 34, was killed in a downtown Johnson City crash that also injured three others; driver faces multiple charges including DUI.
A deadly early morning crash in downtown Johnson City has left 34-year-old Toby Cornett dead and three others injured after a vehicle lost control and entered a parking lot near West Main Street, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The incident has led to multiple criminal charges and an ongoing investigation as authorities work to determine exactly how the crash unfolded in the heart of the city.
Officials said the crash happened around 1:29 a.m. Saturday across from a bicycle shop on West Main Street. Investigators report that the driver lost control of the vehicle, striking a curb before veering off the roadway and entering a nearby parking lot. The vehicle then hit a lamp post, damaged city signage, and eventually came to rest in a group of bushes.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and found multiple people injured at the scene. Authorities confirmed that Toby Cornett suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead following the crash. The sudden loss has left friends and family mourning a life cut short in a chaotic and violent collision in an otherwise busy downtown area.
Three additional individuals were also injured in the crash, including one 22-year-old and two 23-year-olds. Officials have not yet released updates on their medical conditions, and their recoveries remain uncertain as investigators continue gathering information about the incident.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol crash report, 36-year-old Steven Kotsonis was identified as the driver of the vehicle. Officials confirmed that there were also two passengers inside at the time of the crash. Law enforcement later announced multiple charges against Kotsonis, including vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene involving property damage, among others.
Authorities said Kotsonis is currently being held without bond as the legal process moves forward. Investigators are also reviewing the actions of a passenger who may face additional charges, though officials have not released further details about that aspect of the case.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Tennessee Highway Patrol continue to investigate the crash, focusing on factors such as impairment, speed, and driver behavior leading up to the collision. Officials are also reconstructing the vehicle’s path through the downtown area to better understand how it ended up in the parking lot.
For the Johnson City community, the crash has brought shock and sadness, especially given its location in a busy downtown district where people gather on weekends. As investigators continue their work, loved ones of Toby Cornett are left grieving a sudden and devastating loss while authorities seek full accountability for what led to the fatal chain of events.
