GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A tragic shooting incident early Wednesday morning, January 14, has resulted in the deaths of two men and left two police officers in critical condition, as reported by the Gainesville Police Department (GPD).

Gainesville Shooting

The event took place in the 1300 block of East University Avenue, which triggered a significant emergency response. Art Forgey, Public Information Officer for the Gainesville Police, was heading to the site as the event developed.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that several officers from GPD, along with deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO), responded to what was initially labeled as an active situation. The vicinity was swarmed with over 25 police cars, multiple ambulances, and at least three fire trucks.

It was later confirmed by police that the suspect had died. Reports indicate that one of the victims was shot in the head at a nearby 84 Lumber site. Additionally, two police officers from Gainesville were shot during the altercation and were taken under trauma alert to UF Health Shands Hospital, where their conditions were reported as critical.

Deputies from ASO supported GPD at the location. Officials mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, but there is currently no threat to public safety.

The Gainesville Police Department set up a media staging area at the Walgreens at the intersection of Waldo Road and East University Avenue. Authorities advised local residents and travelers to steer clear of the area due to a significant law enforcement presence and heavy traffic jams. Reports indicated that traffic along Waldo Road was completely stopped as investigators worked in the area.

Residents in the northeast part of Gainesville reported hearing several gunshots during the event.

The investigation is still active, and officials have not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased or the injured officers. Additional information will be provided as authorities continue their work at the scene and inform families.
