As reported by the Decatur Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of West Marietta Street around 10:57 a.m. due to reports of gunfire and an individual being wounded. Upon arrival, officers discovered Smith with one or more visible gunshot wounds. He was taken by emergency medical services to the hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Not long after the shooting, 26-year-old Keishaun R. Thomas, along with a family member, visited the Decatur Police Headquarters and provided a statement to law enforcement. Officials indicated that Thomas holds a valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card as well as an active Concealed Carry License (CCL).
Following the review of video evidence, statements from those involved, and discussion with the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office, detectives apprehended Thomas on charges of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.
