PLYMOUTH — A person has passed away after a grave occurrence on the A38 in Plymouth on Wednesday afternoon, January 14, as confirmed by officials, following a fall from the Manadon Flyover.

A38 Suicide

Emergency responders arrived at the location at around 2.35pm due to worries about an individual's safety at Manadon Roundabout. Devon and Cornwall Police reported that the individual had fallen from the flyover and was discovered with serious injuries on the A38. Despite the efforts of police and ambulance teams, the individual succumbed to their injuries.

A representative from the police stated:

“Authorities received a call at 2.35pm on January 14, regarding concerns about an individual’s welfare at Manadon Roundabout in Plymouth. The individual had fallen from the Manadon flyover and was found with grave injuries on the A38. The ambulance service is also present at the scene.”

The event triggered a significant emergency response, with several police and ambulance units arriving. Traffic came to a halt under the flyover, and the A38 southbound (in a westward direction) was closed from Marsh Mills towards Manadon. Initially, the road closure affected both directions, but subsequent traffic updates noted that the eastbound (northbound) lane was reopened later.

After 4pm, Plymouth City Council along with Plymouth Highways released a notice regarding the heavy traffic:

“A38 is now shut from Marsh Mills to Manadon westbound. This is leading to considerable delays on all approaching routes.”

Drivers were encouraged to steer clear of the area if feasible, as the delays impacted numerous entries and exits to the city. Witnesses noted that traffic was completely immobile for a lengthy duration.

At the same time, police in other parts of Plymouth were managing a distinct major incident involving the finding of a suspected bomb at a construction site, which added to the disruptions on the city’s roads.

Officials have not provided additional information regarding the individual involved. The situation remains under investigation, and road closures are anticipated to last for several hours as emergency personnel finish their operations.
