State Route 31 Tragedy: Branden Paradise Dies After Motorcycle Collision With SUV in Upstate New York
Branden Paradise died after a motorcycle crash in Cayuga County, New York, when two motorcycles collided with an SUV at a rural intersection.
Authorities in Cayuga County, New York are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that left 35-year-old Branden J. Paradise of Lyons dead and another motorcyclist seriously injured following a collision at a rural intersection in the town of Mentz. The crash occurred on Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. and involved two motorcycles and a passenger vehicle at the intersection of State Route 31 and Brutus Mentz Townline Road.
According to New York State Police, the incident unfolded when a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 33-year-old Auburn woman was traveling north on Centerport Road and approached a stop sign at State Route 31. Investigators say the driver came to a stop before entering the intersection but failed to see two motorcycles traveling westbound with the right of way, leading to a violent collision.
Both motorcycles struck the passenger side of the SUV, causing significant damage and throwing the riders from their bikes. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where they provided urgent medical care before airlifting both motorcycle operators to Upstate University Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Branden Paradise later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. The second motorcyclist, a 36-year-old Lyons man, remains hospitalized as of the latest updates. Officials have not released additional information about his condition but confirmed he survived the initial impact.
An 18-year-old passenger inside the Nissan Pathfinder was also injured and transported to Auburn Community Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. State police noted that the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators throughout the initial response and follow-up questioning.
At this stage, investigators have not indicated that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Instead, attention remains focused on right-of-way rules at intersections and whether visibility or timing contributed to the SUV entering the path of the motorcycles. Troopers are continuing to reconstruct the sequence of events using physical evidence, roadway markings, and witness statements.
The intersection where the crash occurred is a rural junction where cross-traffic and highway speeds can create high-risk conditions, particularly when multiple vehicles approach from different directions. Authorities often emphasize caution in such areas, where even brief misjudgments can lead to severe outcomes given the speed and exposure of motorcycles.
As the investigation continues, the community in Lyons is mourning the loss of Branden Paradise, while another family awaits updates on the condition of the second injured rider. Officials say further details may be released once the reconstruction analysis is complete and all evidence has been reviewed by state police investigators.
