Michigan City High School Junior Javon Townsend Dies in Violent Post-Prom Shooting in Pine Township
Javon Townsend, 17, was killed in an after-prom party shooting in Pine Township, Indiana, while two other teens were injured and hospitalized.
A post-prom celebration in Porter County, Indiana turned into a devastating scene of violence Saturday night, leaving a family mourning the loss of 17-year-old Javon Townsend and two other young people recovering from injuries after a shooting erupted inside a home where students had gathered to celebrate the end of the school year.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of Liberty Avenue in Pine Township, just outside Michigan City. What began as a social gathering after prom quickly escalated when a fight broke out, according to police, followed by gunfire that sent attendees running for safety as chaos spread through the home and surrounding neighborhood.
Javon Townsend, a junior at Michigan City High School, was struck multiple times during the shooting. He was transported to Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City, where he later died from his injuries, according to the La Porte County Coroner’s Office. His death has left his family, friends, and classmates grappling with a sudden loss that has deeply shaken the community.
Loved ones described Townsend as a bright young man with a positive presence, someone who brought energy and kindness into the spaces he entered. His grandmother and relatives shared emotional memories, saying he was looking forward to milestones like graduation and senior year experiences that he will now never have the chance to reach.
The shooting also injured an 18-year-old female and another male juvenile, both of whom were taken to hospitals for treatment. One of the victims reportedly suffered injuries while attempting to flee the scene as shots were fired, highlighting the sudden and chaotic nature of the incident that unfolded within moments.
Investigators with Porter County Sheriff’s Police said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident connected to a disturbance that escalated inside the home. Authorities also noted that other bullets struck nearby homes, damaging windows but fortunately not injuring additional residents in the neighborhood.
School officials confirmed that several Michigan City High School students were present at the gathering following prom activities. In response to the tragedy, the district announced counseling and support services for students and staff as the school community begins to process the emotional impact of the loss.
A reward has been offered for information leading to those responsible, as investigators continue urging witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. As the investigation moves forward, the focus remains on answers for a family grieving a teenager remembered not just for how he died, but for the life and future that was taken from him far too soon.
