Jones County Motorcycle Crash Claims Life of 22-Year-Old Maryland Rider Mason Alkire on Highway 6

 A Monday evening drive along State Highway 6 in Jones County ended in tragedy after a fatal motorcycle crash claimed the life of 22-year-old Mason Alkire, a young rider from Maryland. What began as a routine stretch of roadway south of Farm-to-Market Road 704 quickly turned into a scene of flashing emergency lights, stopped traffic, and a loss that authorities say happened in an instant.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Alkire was riding a 2025 Kawasaki Ninja northbound around 7:30 p.m. when the crash occurred. Investigators say he struck the rear of a truck towing a dump trailer, a collision that proved fatal at the scene. Justice of the Peace Cheryl Guemsey later pronounced him deceased at the location.

Preliminary findings indicate that speed played a significant role in the crash. DPS reported that Alkire was attempting to overtake another vehicle and may have been traveling at an excessive rate of speed before returning to the lane and losing control of his motorcycle. Authorities say he was unable to stop in time before colliding with the truck ahead of him.

The truck involved was a 2022 Ford F-350 pulling a 2025 Big Tex dump trailer, driven by 42-year-old Jeremy Harris of Stamford, Texas. Officials confirmed Harris was properly restrained and was not injured in the collision. No other injuries were reported, and weather conditions at the time were clear with dry roadways, reducing the likelihood of environmental factors contributing to the crash.

While the investigation remains ongoing, officials noted that the posted speed limit in the area was 75 mph. DPS also confirmed that Alkire was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Even with protective gear, the force of a high-speed rear-end impact can overwhelm safety equipment, underscoring the dangers riders face when traffic conditions change suddenly or when distance and speed are misjudged.

Motorcycle safety experts often emphasize that high-performance bikes like sport models require careful speed management, especially on rural highways where slower-moving trucks and trailers are common. A brief miscalculation in closing distance can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation, particularly when heavy vehicles are involved.
