A devastating head-on crash on State Route 18 in Pinon Hills has left a Southern California family shattered, after three relatives were killed and several children were seriously injured in a collision that unfolded on the evening of May 9, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.

Javier Hernandez Ramirez, Marisela Orozco and Alfredo Orozco Killed

Authorities identified the victims as Javier Hernandez Ramirez, 58, and his wife Marisela Orozco, 51, both from Pacoima, along with Alfredo Orozco, 18, of Covina. All three were traveling together in a silver Honda Odyssey minivan carrying six family members when the crash occurred on the rural stretch of highway known for its sharp curves and limited visibility.

Investigators said the collision happened around 7:50 p.m. on State Route 18 near Minero Road when a black Jeep Wrangler traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Honda head-on. The force of the impact was severe enough that three occupants of the minivan were pronounced dead at the scene, while others inside suffered critical injuries requiring emergency transport.

Emergency responders worked urgently to extract victims from the wreckage, with two survivors airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center due to the seriousness of their injuries. A third injured passenger was taken by ambulance. Officials said the Jeep driver sustained minor injuries and was also transported for medical evaluation. No life-threatening injuries were reported for that driver.

The California Highway Patrol’s Victorville office is leading the investigation into what caused the Jeep to cross into oncoming traffic. Early findings indicate that drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role, but investigators are continuing to examine roadway conditions, driver actions, and other potential contributing factors that may have led to the fatal lane departure.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, family members and the wider community have rallied to support the surviving children who lost loved ones in the crash and are now recovering from serious injuries. A GoFundMe campaign titled “Support Paola Hernandez’s Family After Tragedy” has been launched to help cover funeral expenses and ongoing medical and financial needs during what relatives describe as an overwhelming period of grief.

The fundraiser has drawn donations and messages of support, reflecting the emotional impact the crash has had beyond just the immediate family. Another fundraising effort has also been created specifically for Alfredo Orozco’s family, as loved ones work to manage multiple losses within the same extended household.

As investigators continue piecing together the events that led to the deadly collision, the community is left mourning a sudden and heartbreaking loss. What began as a family trip along a familiar highway ended in irreversible tragedy, leaving children injured, parents and a young adult gone, and a family forever changed in a matter of seconds on a quiet California roadway.
