Gregory Steele Arrested After Fatal Vidalia Crash That Killed Michelle Baity and Jacob Bonnette
Gregory Steele was arrested after a fatal crash in Vidalia, Louisiana that killed Michelle Baity and Jacob Bonnette and injured others.
A late-night crash on Minorca Road in Concordia Parish has left two young lives lost and a community shaken, after authorities say an 18-year-old driver lost control of a vehicle that overturned in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Louisiana State Police reported that the crash happened around 12:37 a.m. on May 10, when a 2001 Infiniti QX4 traveling along the roadway left its lane and overturned. Inside the vehicle were four young occupants, all of whom were from the Vidalia and surrounding area, according to investigators.
Passengers Michelle Baity, 17, of Natchez, Mississippi, and Jacob Bonnette, 19, of Vidalia, suffered fatal injuries in the violent rollover. Authorities confirmed both were pronounced dead at the scene. Officials also noted that neither of the victims was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, a detail investigators continue to emphasize as part of their ongoing safety messaging.
A third passenger survived the crash but sustained moderate injuries and was transported for medical treatment. The driver, identified as Gregory Steele, 18, of Vidalia, also suffered minor injuries and was later taken into custody as the investigation unfolded.
State police said early findings indicate impairment is suspected to have played a role in the crash. Toxicology samples were collected and sent for analysis as part of standard procedure. Investigators are working to determine how speed, road conditions, and driver behavior may have combined in the moments leading up to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
Following the investigation, Steele was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, underage driving while intoxicated, vehicular negligent injuring, and careless operation. He was booked into the Concordia Parish Detention Center as the legal process moves forward.
The crash has deeply affected families in both Vidalia and Natchez, as friends and classmates mourn the loss of two teenagers whose lives ended in a matter of seconds. In small communities, tragedies like this often ripple outward quickly, leaving schools, neighborhoods, and families trying to process grief while searching for answers.
As Louisiana State Police continue reconstructing the events of that night, officials are also using the incident to reinforce the importance of seat belt use and safe driving practices, particularly among younger drivers. The investigation remains active as authorities work to establish a complete timeline of what led to the fatal rollover on Minorca Road.
